Director of Compensation
Greater Boston Area
We have been retained by a premier institution of higher education in the Greater Boston area as they seek an outstanding Director of Compensation. Reporting to the Director of Rewards and System, the Director of Compensation leads the planning, design, implementation and administration of the University’s compensation programs with an eye toward attracting and retaining top talent. The Director of Compensation will play an important role in developing and executing a strategy for compensation that is aligned with the goal of ensuring a diverse, high performing workforce. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:
Direct the planning, design, implementation and administration of the University’s compensation programs, including those related to: market pricing, survey participation, base salary structure, merit pay programs, variable pay, job evaluation and leveling, core system changes, etc.
Research strategic and tactical compensation issues and recommend new initiatives and changes to the compensation philosophy, programs and practices, as necessary
Lead compensation projects that support the overall compensation strategy of the University
Regularly review market trends and salary schedules to ensure the University's competitiveness within the marketplace; recommends adjustments to structures, models and approaches in support of University goals and objectives
Oversee executive compensation in conjunction with VP, HR and Director, Rewards and Systems
Oversee university participation in surveys. Manage survey input / analysis and development of salary structures and metrics to monitor effectiveness of structures
Collaborate with Schools/units and provide innovative solutions to their specific concerns
Monitor the overall compliance of compensation practices with University policy and state and federal regulations
Oversee the development of compensation systems and tools which monitor the effectiveness of programs
Lead and manage a team of compensation professionals; model strong performance management and development practices
Background and experience:
Demonstrated success in the delivery of high quality compensation processes and programs with a balance of centralized and decentralized services
Progressive experience and success in a compensation focused leadership role
Strong experience leading, developing and mentoring teams
Ability to effectively facilitate change with a mix of patience and persuasion
A problem solver who is able to remain focused when faced with obstacles and challenges
Strong relationship builder with experience working effectively with multiple constituencies
Strengths in compensation theory, practice and compliance
Bachelor’s Degree required, Master’s degree preferred, with a minimum of 12 + years related experience
Excellent managerial, influencing, communication and analytical skills are essential
Key Competencies:
Business and organizational acumen – with ability to align compensation strategy to long and short term University initiatives
A bias toward problem solving and “hands-on” implementation
Strong influencing skills
Collaborative style, with ability to build trusting relationships
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
Strong analytic skills and facility working with HR Information Systems
Patience to thrive in a highly collaborative and consensus driven culture
